The Great CAFOD Bake Off!

18 October 2013

Hold a cake sale or bake off at your office, school or parish to fundraise for CAFOD

Celebrating National Baking Week, CAFOD Community Fundraising team decided to hold a fundraising baking competition for the whole of CAFOD headquarters.

The competition saw a fantastic effort from staff, with over fifty entries of bakes in the categories of cakes, pies and breads, which were then sold on to staff once the judges had tasted everything on offer.

Staff were given a helping hand in choosing the best from the rest, with a special guest appearance from ITV presenter and CAFOD ambassador Adrian Chiles and his colleague and ex England International and Arsenal player, Lee Dixon.

Everybody got involved, including CAFOD’s director, Chris Bain, who had never baked before in his life.

“I baked a Guinness cake, which comes accompanied by a pint of Guinness,” Chris told us, “This was quite an experiment, but it turned out well. I really wanted to join in today to be part of the creativity of CAFOD and its entire staff, and just to try something new. Most of all I am so pleased with everybody’s engagement, everyone has joined in and we’re all fundraising together.”

Winner of best cake however, was clear for the judges, with our humanitarian department coordinator’s Ruth Norval spectacular Gin and Tonic cake clinching the prize. Ruth told us, “This is my ultimate hobby, I’ve done lots of baking for today, and most of all I really wanted the challenge.”

There were also prizes for Zoe Corden, our major gifts co-ordinator for her tasty olive bread and Liz Funnell, Programmes Department Coordinator, for her excellent pastry in her bakewell tart.

Overall, sales of the cake stall raised over £250 for CAFOD’s work helping those who need it most around the world.
