Introducing the Tour De Fred

7 May 2013

The volunteer from Salford will cycle more than 1,000 miles in a challenge we have dubbed 'Tour de Fred'. He will journey between Catholic Churches and Cathedrals around England and Wales, raising money to support small-scale farmers in Rajshabi, Bangladesh and raising awareness of CAFOD's Hungry for Change campaign.

Fred's challenge, which he hopes to complete in just under three weeks, starts on June 9th when Fred and his support team depart from Salford Cathedral, making two huge loops of the country before returning to Manchester for a grand reception on June 28th.

The great grandfather told us his inspiration for a bike ride came out of the blue as an alternative to his normal fundraising quiz. "

“I wanted to think of another way to raise money, so I was sat at home and then it came to me: ‘Why don’t I do a bike ride round each of the dioceses in the UK for CAFOD?’ I haven’t ridden a bike in 50 years, so I think the distance will the biggest challenge!”

Fred has been a CAFOD Events volunteer for ten years, and as a keen football fan has held CAFOD football tournaments in primary schools, and took football shirts from Everton, Liverpool and Burnley to a CAFOD project in Liberia. Now he has turned his attention to cycling, and there are many way you can get involved!
