Six ways Catholics can change the world in 2019
10 January 2019
As we start 2019 we’ve thought of six ways you can change the world. Join us in raising your voice for the most vulnerable people living in poverty and, together, who knows what we can achieve this year?
1) Sign up to be a campaigner
Being a campaigner doesn’t have to take over your life – you might have campaigned without even realising it. Ever signed a petition or contacted your MP about an issue that you care about? Then you’re a campaigner already!
CAFOD campaigns to tackle the root causes of poverty and hunger, rather than just the symptoms. Stand alongside our sisters and brothers living in poverty and speak up for the voiceless. It’s as easy as signing up to our campaign emails to stay up-to-date with our new campaigns and the successes we achieve, as well as the ways you can get involved.
2) Get on board with Laudato Si’
Our climate is a common good and we’re invited to help protect it by Pope Francis in his encyclical, Laudato Si’.
No matter how busy our lives are we can all make time to appreciate and act on the words of Laudato Si’. Whether this is choosing to eat less meat, joining a car share scheme, or simply taking time to pray and reflect on the differences we need to make to protect the earth, all of these choices take us a step closer to a better world.
3) Choose to Livesimply
50 communities are putting Laudato Si’ into action and have already signed up to livesimply. Parishes, schools, religious orders and chaplaincies have chosen to live simply, sustainably, and in solidarity with people living in poverty. Choosing to livesimply is just that - simple. Changes such as encouraging people to walk or cycle to church or school, installing solar panels, starting recycling schemes, composting food waste – these are all parts of living simply.
Not sure you can get your whole community involved? Each individual choosing to make these changes contributes to a cleaner, safer world for all of us. If you start to make these changes, who knows who will follow your example?
4) Become an MP Correspondent
Your local MP is your link to Parliament. They have the power to influence decisions which will affect the future of the world’s poorest people.
By becoming a CAFOD MP Correspondent (MPC), you can help to ensure that the voices of many of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people are heard by those that can make a difference.
Through letters and meetings with MPs, CAFOD supporters have already helped change government policy. By becoming an MPC you could continue the good work and continue to push MPs to make greater changes.
5) Volunteer to be a Climate Champion
Aged between 18-35? Each year CAFOD takes on around 20 young volunteers to work specifically on campaigning on climate change. Climate change, living more sustainably and caring for creation are crucial parts of our faith. This volunteer opportunity enables you to gain new experiences, meet others interested in tackling climate change and, ultimately, to play your part in creating a better world.
As a CAFOD Climate Champion, you will take part in workshops and a residential on sustainability and campaigning with other Catholic young adults across England and Wales. Based on your existing strengths and skills, we will support you in raising awareness on the climate issues of today. You’ll work within your parish or community, as well as talking to your MP and participating in our climate campaigns.
6) Switch your energy supplier
In our Power to be campaign, we called on the World Bank to ensure renewable energy access for the world’s poorest people. We’ve also seen a growing global commitment to turn away from fossil fuels wherever possible, switching to renewable energy as a way of tackling climate change.
We know our governments have begun listening to the need to switch to renewable energy sources, but we can strengthen this message if we as individuals choose a renewable energy supplier. We’ve partnered with Ecotricity, a 100% renewable energy company. You can get both gas and electricity through Ecotricity, no matter where you live in the country. What’s more, all of their profits are invested in new sources of renewable energy, meaning a brighter future for all of us. Still in doubt? Their ethical price policy means you always get their latest best price, no matter when you became a customer, and for every switch to Ecotricity, they will donate £60 to CAFOD.
