Feeling alone as a new mum: Unity’s story

Becoming a mother for the very first time is a life changing and amazing experience. It can also be scary and tiring. That’s why so many parents in the UK join classes and groups that provide moral and practical support.

But Unity, 20, in Zimbabwe, felt very alone after giving birth to her son Twalumba. She was worried he wasn’t growing enough.

Your Mother’s Day gift can fund support groups to help new mums learn about breastfeeding

“I had difficulties feeding,” Unity explained. “My child was so small, I held him any way I thought. But the milk spilled out his mouth or came out his nose. He wasn’t growing as fast as he should have been. It was very painful to see him suffer.”

Twalumba was at risk of becoming severely malnourished. But, because of donations from people like you, a new mums group was set up in Unity’s village so that all Mothers have a place to learn and care for their children.
