Coming soon…Lent Fast Day

Marian from Zimbabwe grows vegetables in her CAFOD-funded community garden

CAFOD gave Marian vegetable seeds, nutrition and farming training. She can now grow food to keep her children strong and healthy.

Family Fast Day during Lent is Friday 23 February 2018

This Lent we hear from Marian who lives in Zimbabwe.

When Marian's children were younger, she didn’t have enough to feed them. She’d leave her son Tawanda in the morning while she went looking for work, and when she came back hours later, he would still be sitting in the same place.

CAFOD gave Marian vegetable seeds, nutrition and farming training, and fenced off a community vegetable garden to keep it safe from livestock. Marian is now growing a range of nutritious vegetables, nuts and beans for her children. Tawanda, now 21, also has his own vegetable plot. Marian’s youngest son, Svondo, is healthy and growing well compared to when Tawanda was his age. He has a good diet and especially loves peanut butter.

Help us to share this incredible story of transformation and invite your community to fundraise and pray, so we can help to transform more families and communities like Marian’s.

We’ve got some great resources to help get your parish, group or community get involved this Family Fast Day.

Get ready with our top Lent resources:

1. Pin up our eye-catching poster to let everyone know that Family Fast Day is approaching.

2. At Mass, use our short talk to introduce the parish to Marian, and let everyone know how their Lenten donation can be transformed in to something amazing. If you would like to have someone speak at Mass, please contact your local CAFOD volunteer centre.

3. Hold a soup lunch on Family Fast Day, or a series of soup lunches throughout Lent! Use our poster and guide to help organise your soup-er fundraising.

4. Our prayers of intercession can be used at church, with your prayer group, your family or on your own in quiet reflection. You can also order our prayer card from the CAFOD shop.

5. Get children in your parish involved too by downloading the children’s liturgy and illustration for the first Sunday of Lent ahead of Lent Fast Day.

Find all this and more on our Lent Family Fast Day resources page

We also have great resources for young people to learn about life for children in Zimbabwe. Our Lent pages for primary school resources and young people's resources have everything you need to get your pupils involved.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Lent Appeal. Your gifts will change lives around the world. And if you donated between 13 February and 12 May, the UK Government will double your donation!
