When Matt’s dad and aunt passed away, his family set up a CAFOD Candlelight Fund in their memory.

Back in 2008, Matt – currently living in Long Island – courageously took on the New York Marathon to raise money for our work. He told us that, as much as he enjoyed this achievement, he didn’t fancy doing it again.

But this year he put on his running shoes one more time, running the London Marathon to raise money for the Candlelight Fund in memory of his dad, Trevor, and his aunt, Jayne.

“I said I'd never do another marathon, yet here I am," Matt told us. "It was for Dad and Jayne. They kept me going and helped me put one foot in front of the other.”

We are so thankful for all Matt has done. What a special and wonderful thing to do.

Some families who have lost someone close to them choose to set up a Candlelight Fund, which is a special fund in memory of a loved one who has died. Through your fund, all donations made in their memory are combined to make a real difference to some of the world’s poorest families.

You can donate, share photos and a few words about your loved one on your own online page, making it a truly personal tribute to them.

We know that not everyone feels up to taking on a marathon. But regular donations, selling cakes and handicrafts, or holding an event in memory of your loved one are all fantastic ways to support our work.
