Advent calendar prayer and reflection for 4 December

CAFOD Lost Family Portraits Razir from Syria

"I have nothing now," says Razir, a refugee from Syria (Dario Mitidieri)

Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war.

Isaiah 2:1-5

In our world today, so many people are facing the effects of conflict. 60 million people have been forced from their homes by war and persecution.

Razir, 40, fled from Syria to Lebanon because of the war. “We were at a funeral burying someone. The bombs blew the cemetery up, it was very frightening. There was the noise of screaming. We ran. I have nothing now. My home is gone. I have lost my husband. I don’t even have a place to be buried now, the place where all my family are buried has been destroyed.”

The vision of Isaiah is one of peace. Swords will be hammered into ploughshares, spears into sickles. People will live together side by side in peace and there will be no more war. Let us pray and work so that this vision may become a reality.

Advent prayer

God of mercy, pour out your peace upon us, so that nation will no longer lift sword against nation, nor learn to make war. Amen.

Pray for peace this Advent and for all those who have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict.
