Advent calendar prayer and reflection for 4 December

Waed with puppets for Syrian child refugees in Jordan

Waed uses puppets with Syrian children in Jordan to help them overcome trauma

“I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children.”

Luke 10:21-24

Children have a special way of looking at the world. Everything is new to them. They are much more willing to believe and to accept than adults who feel like they know the answers.

But many children around the world have seen things that nobody should. They have witnessed violence, felt loss and trauma, and been forced from their homes.

Waed is an educator and child psychologist in Jordan. She works with Syrian refugee children who are traumatised by what has happened to them.

She helps the children to make puppets and to do a role play to talk about their experiences.

Waed says, “The best bit about my job is enjoying the smile of the person in front of me. If I can’t give them anything, just giving them hope makes me happy.”

Advent prayer

God of hope, watch over all your children throughout the world. Bless them so that they may know peace, freedom, fun and laughter again. Amen.
