Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 15 April

Raphael at a borehole in Uganda with his bicycle

Raphael is a borehole mechanic in Uganda, who was helped following the Lent 2016 appeal

“I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. Hope in him, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!”

Psalm 26:1-3, 13-14 R v 1

It can be hard to hold onto hope sometimes. As we look around us at the state of the world, we can despair that humankind will ever learn from the mistakes of the past. We may worry about what the future holds.

Hold firm and take heart

But the psalmist reminds us today that we can always hope in the Lord. We are certain to see the Lord’s goodness.

Believing in God can give us the courage to carry on, even in the hardest times. And through our prayers, support and solidarity others may gain the courage to carry on too.

Gift of hope

Matching your donations with UK aid

Thanks to your generosity during Lent 2016, which was matched by the UK government, we have helped 30,000 people in Uganda access clean drinking water.

To keep the supply running, 30 hand pump mechanics have received training, tools and protective clothing. So far they have repaired more than 100 boreholes so the community can rely on safe water for drinking and washing.

“I like my job because I have knowledge that can help my community,” says Raphael, one of these mechanics. We gave him a bicycle, so he can travel further and reach more boreholes.

“When I received the bike I was very happy. I’ve never had a bike before. My first journey was to one of the broken boreholes in my parish that I couldn’t get to before.

“Thank you so much for bringing change to our community.”

This Holy Week, let us look for the Lord’s goodness in our lives. Let us hold onto the hope that things can and will get better, and share that hope with others.

Holy Week prayer

God of life, fill me with your hope and help me to see your goodness in this world. Strengthen all your children, so that we may hold firm, take heart and stand alongside those like Raphael who are in need. Amen.
