Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 19 April - Good Friday

An enormous cross in the countryside in Ethiopia

A large cross in Ethiopia

"So in the end Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified."

John 18:1 – 19:42

Today, on Good Friday, we remember the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is not an easy story to hear. It is filled with betrayal, violence, humiliation and sorrow.

But as we are also reminded in today’s first reading, Christ’s death is not without purpose. He dies for us and for our salvation.

“On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

Today, as we pray and fast, we ask forgiveness for all that we have done wrong and recommit ourselves to living as Christ calls us to.

Good Friday prayer

God of mercy, forgive us our sins.

For the times we have closed our eyes to injustice: Lord, have mercy.

For the times we have closed our ears to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor: Christ, have mercy.

For the times we have closed our hearts to our sisters and brothers in need: Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Act

Reflect today on the Stations of the Cross. As you meditate today on the Lord’s passion, pray for our brothers and sisters living in poverty around the world.
