Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 2 March

Liney in Colombia CAFOD

Liney is working with other women in Colombia to build peace in her community

Here comes the man of dreams. Come on, let us kill him.

Genesis 37: 3-4, 12-13, 17-18

Today’s reading reflects the worst of humanity. Joseph is despised by his brothers, because he is his father’s favourite. His brothers mock him and throw him into an empty well, before selling him as a slave.

The brothers are heartless. Yet, their attitude is sadly so familiar. It’s all too easy to be jealous of others – especially close members of our own families. Why is it sometimes so hard to love one another as God loves us?

Broken dreams

For more than 50 years, Colombia has been ravaged by an armed conflict which has hurt millions of people.

“When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher,” says Liney Contreras in Colombia. “But that all changed. After the attack I wanted to be more dead than alive. My dreams went out the window.”

Liney was just 16 years old when she was caught in a car bomb explosion. She lost her right arm and spent six months in hospital. The attack meant her name was added to the list of over seven million victims of Colombia’s conflict.

Liney gradually began to rebuild her life. She married and moved to a small village with her two young children. But her dreams of a peaceful life were shattered once again.

“My brother came to live in the village, he was 18 years old and working on a farm,” she says. “He didn’t realise the farm owner was in trouble with armed groups and early one morning they arrived looking for him. When they couldn’t find the owner, they took my brother and two other men who worked there and killed them.”

Sowing seeds of peace

Liney will never forget this painful tragedy. But now, ten years on, she is slowly building peace in her community.

She founded an organisation which supports women victims of conflict to stand up for their rights. She explains what inspired her to battle for peace.

“I think all that had happened gave me the strength to do something,” she says. “I thought that on my own I couldn’t do much, but that together we could do much more. It is the women that inspire me to keep going.”

Lent prayer

God of all humanity, give us the strength to hold onto our dreams when hope seems lost. Send us your Spirit, Lord, that we may restore peace to your creation. Amen.
