Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 24 February

Caritas in Kenya - CAFOD in Lent

Gumato, 47, from Kenya says, “God sent Caritas just in time to save our lives.”

They are happy those who do his will, seeking him with all their hearts.

Psalm 118:1-2,4-5,7-8. R. v.1

Gumato Gollo, 47, lives in northern Kenya. She has faced incredible challenges. Yet she finds happiness in God.

Gumato has known hunger all her life. In this region, the drought is so severe that people are driven to battle over scarce water and livestock. Her husband was killed a few years ago in conflict.

Hunger also stole her eldest son. She worked hard and did everything she could to bring her son some food. But there just wasn’t enough, and he grew thinner and thinner. “I was in desperation,” she says, “and I gave it all up to God.”

Sadly, Gumato’s son passed away.

She remembers how she felt during this this distressing time. “Our only hope was God, all other alternatives had closed.”

Thanks be to God, Gumato never gave up hope. And thanks to your compassion, she found strength to continue. She welcomed the day when our partner, Caritas Marsabit, brought emergency food to her community.

“God sent Caritas just in time to save lives. We are very grateful for their presence, and the food that has reached us.”

“The food I’m collecting today will keep my other five children alive. This food is happiness.”

Lent prayer

God our Father, may we be nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. May we become bread broken for our neighbours who are hungry. Amen.
