Lent calendar prayer and reflection for 27 February

Benhilda Hute gave birth to both of her children at Mtora Mission Hospital in Zimbabwe.

Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live in the love of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Moses invited the people of Israel to “choose life” by choosing to follow God’s ways. Lent is a time when we can renew our own choice to do the same.

Water for life

Benhilda Hute, 22, remembers coming to Mtora Mission Hospital in Zimbabwe when she was pregnant with her first child. There was no water at the hospital and Benhilda had to walk 500 metres just to get water to drink or wash her hands.

“It was very difficult carrying the water back when you’re heavily pregnant. I had pains in my chest and I got short of breath.”

Returning to the hospital four years later to have her second child, Benhilda found that she could easily fetch water from a storage tank within the hospital, built with help from CAFOD supporters.

“Now it’s very different. Collecting water is very near. I fetch a bucketful of water from the garden here in the clinic and I don’t feel any pain… I feel safe and happy now.”

In today’s readings, God calls us to choose a life that is not governed by self-interest, but instead a life of love. Love for God and for one another.

If we truly choose life, then it must mean life for all people, including expectant mothers like Benhilda, who need nutritious food, water and healthcare for themselves and their babies.

Lent prayer

God of life, may my choices be guided by your love so that all people may live to their full potential. Amen.
