Lent reflection for 2 April: Good Friday

Cross silhouetted against sky

It is fulfilled

“He said, ‘It is fulfilled’; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.”

John 19:30

Today, on Good Friday, we remember the passion and death of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

It is not an easy story – it is filled with betrayal, violence and sorrow.

Yet we know that Christ’s death is not without a purpose. He fulfilled the words of scripture that had foretold the coming of the Messiah. He died for us and for our salvation.

As it says in today’s first reading:

“On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5).

Today, as we pray and fast, we seek forgiveness for all that we have done wrong. And we recommit ourselves to living as Christ has shown us.

Good Friday prayer

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Forgive me for the times I have done wrong. For the times I have closed my eyes to injustice, or my heart to the needs of others, have mercy on me, I pray. Amen.

Act

Reflect on the Stations of the Cross. As you meditate on the Lord’s passion, pray for our brothers and sisters who lack clean, safe water.
