Novena day six - For the love of the earth

Amazon land damaged by mining

Land in the Amazon basin ravaged by mining

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
all praise is yours, all glory, honour and blessings.
We praise you, Lord, for all your creatures.

We praise you, Lord, for Sister Earth,
who sustains us with her fruits,
coloured flowers, and herbs.

An extract from the Canticle of the Sun by St Francis of Assisi

Praise and penitence

Creator God, we give you thanks for our sister earth, who nourishes us with her abundance and is our home.

Forgive us for the times when we have harmed the beautiful earth you gave us or taken more than our share of the gifts of creation. We stand beside our sisters and brothers whose land and water are destroyed by mining.

Guide the Church as she listens to the cry of the Amazon people. Guide us all to respect the fragile balance of nature, in which everything is interconnected.

May we learn from the wisdom of those who live in the heart of nature, custodians of the forests on which we depend.

Lead us as we walk together with our sisters and brothers in their hopes and struggles, and fill us with the courage to protect our common home for generations to come.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,

St Francis, pray for us.

“We can no longer eat from the river as we used to; people are having to move away from their lands. This is not just happening in my community, it’s the same story in so many places since the mining companies arrived.”

José Horlando, indigenous spokesperson, Marañón, Brazil
