Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
all praise is yours, all glory, honour and blessings.
We praise you, Lord, for all your creatures.

We praise you, Lord,
for Sister Moon and the stars,
in the heavens you have made them
bright, precious and fair

An extract from the Canticle of the Sun by St Francis of Assisi

Praise and penitence

Creator God, we give you thanks for our sister moon and the stars which light the sky at night.

Forgive us for the times when we have harmed the beautiful earth you gave us or taken more than our share of the gifts of creation. We fill our cities with light in the dark, consuming energy without thought for those who do not share its benefits. Make us mindful in our use of the earth’s resources.

Guide the Church as she listens to the cry of the Amazon people. Guide us all to respect the fragile balance of nature, in which everything is interconnected.

May we learn from the wisdom of those who live in the heart of nature, custodians of the forests on which we depend.

Lead us as we walk together with our sisters and brothers in their hopes and struggles, and fill us with the courage to protect our common home for generations to come.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,

St Francis, pray for us.

“We plant only the plants that feed us, we want no factories, no holes in the ground, nor dirty rivers. We want the forest to remain quiet, the sky to remain clear, the evening darkness to really fall and for the stars to be seen.”
