Parish volunteers

Here are the current priorities for Parish Volunteers. We encourage you to use the resources provided to hold these activities within your parish this month.

Family Fast Day

Mahinur from Bangladesh shows that she can't find enough fish in the river

Mahinur can't find enough fish in the river in Bangladesh to feed her family.

We hope you are looking forward to this year’s Lent Family Fast Day on Friday 15 March. Planning meetings are currently taking place for Fast Day volunteers. Please contact your local volunteer centre for information on your nearest meeting. All the resources you need are here. For a deeper insight into Mahinur’s life, the woman we are featuring in the Fast Day resources, have a look at When the river runs dry, which paints a more vivid picture of the struggles Mahinur faces and will help you as you encourage others to give.

Prayers for Yemen

CAFOD’s Director, Chris Bain, has written to our bishops encouraging them to support a call to pray for the people of Yemen. As you may have seen in the news, the human suffering in Yemen is one of the gravest humanitarian crises in the world today. After nearly four years of war, more than 14 million people are facing starvation and 85,000 children may have already died from extreme hunger since 2015.

A mother holds a baby in Yemen suffering from malnutrition, the UN warns that Yemen faces worst famine for 100 years.

The UN warns that Yemen faces worst famine for 100 years.

There is some hope in Yemen, with a ceasefire brokered last month promising to restore the Hodeida port and allow food and medicine into Yemen. CAFOD has worked through partners in Yemen since 2016, and while we welcomed the UK government’s announcement last week that it will uplift funding to the UN Peace process in Yemen by £2.5 million, we know that the situation is so desperate that more needs to be done. Here you can find some aspects of the Yemen crisis explained.

National volunteer meetings - save the dates

For the first time in years, we are holding two national gatherings for CAFOD volunteers on 8 and 15 June, and we’d love you to attend one of them. It will be a chance to meet and hear from our new director, Christine Allen, as well as to explore our mission as we look to the future. More details soon.
