Host a foodie fundraiser

Get cooking for CAFOD! Share in the love of food with your friends, family or community and help us end world hunger and poverty.

Start fundraising

Host your very own foodie fundraiser for CAFOD – whether it’s an international dinner party, a BBQ or picnic, or even a cooking class experience. It's a fantastic way to connect with friends, family, or your parish while also raising funds and awareness for CAFOD’s work around the world.

Follow our recipe for success

Anyone can host their own foodie fundraiser! You may be a passionate cook, a dinner party enthusiast or simply love sharing your favourite food with loved ones.

You could host a brunch with colleagues at your workplace, a dinner party or BBQ at home, or an international potluck night with your parish.

1. Get people involved!

Ask for help from your family, friends, work colleagues or other parishioners. There’s lots of talented chefs out there who would love to show off their cooking skills. If not, ask people to pick up their favourite treats from the supermarket.

2. Set up your foodie fundraiser

Book the parish hall or other suitable venue and set a date and time. When planning your event, make sure you know how much food you will have at your event to prevent food wastage. You could bring Tupperware, so people can take leftovers home!

3. Promote your foodie fundraiser

Use social media to spread the word! You could even notify the local press, or put a notice in your parish newsletter. See our top 10 tips for more ideas on how to promote your event.

4. Get cooking!

Lay out the tables, decorate them and present your spread. You could price up the items, charge per plate or ask for a donation.

5. Have some fun!

If you’re feeling competitive, you could run a cooking competition. Host a Masterchef style event, asking people to judge their favourite dish and donate to cast their vote. Or, if you know some particularly accomplished cooks, ask them to go head-to-head in a jollof rice cook off, a BBQ meat or veggie grill off or bake-off style technical challenge.

Remember to tag @cafod if you post on social media, or email events@cafod.org.uk to tell us all about your foodie fundraiser.

6. Give yourself a pat on the back

You’ve just helped people around the world working to overcome poverty. Thank you. Don’t forget to pay in your donations through JustGiving, or via our website

Potato curry recipe

Ingredients:

4 medium potatoes, 1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder, 3 tbsp vegetable oil, ½ tsp garam masala (optional), 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander.

Method:

Peel the potatoes and half boil them, drain and dice them into cubes.

Add cumin seeds, chopped onion and crushed garlic to a pan and fry in oil until soft.

In a small bowl mix cumin powder and chilli powder and add 3–4 tablespoons of water to make a runny paste. Add this to the onion mixture and cook for one minute. Add chopped potatoes and stir.

Sprinkle salt (to taste) and add 1½–2 cups of water (or more as desired) and cook for 10–12 mins, or until the potatoes are cooked entirely.

Sprinkle garam masala, add chopped coriander and serve.
