Lizbeth has been working with her community in Peru to call for safer water
When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the LORD will answer them.
There are so many places in our world today where people struggle to get the safe water that they need to drink, wash or to keep their crops and animals alive.
On the outskirts of Lima, Peru, a group of neighbours banded together to tackle their limited access to safe drinking water. For four years, Lizbeth was part of a team collecting evidence that the poorest communities were paying more than other, wealthier areas, for worse-quality water.
With CAFOD’s support, Lizbeth and her community took the report to the government and were able to speak up in citizen forums in Lima. As a result, they were supplied with tanks and equipment that improved their water quality.
Everyone worked to install the tanks, which has brought another benefit to the community, as Lizbeth explains:
“The most important thing is it has brought together all neighbours in the district.”
During the Advent season we are longing not just for the birth of Christ at Christmas but his triumphant return. While we wait, we take action to reflect God’s kingdom here on earth, working for a world in which all people may safely quench their thirst.

God of life,
pour out your mercy upon us
and fill us all with the living water of your love.
Open our ears to the voices
of our brothers and sisters
and move us to work together with them
in our shared thirst for justice
