Syrian refugees in Lebanon attend a book club
Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths.
Despite perhaps wishing the contrary, we do not know everything. We all have times when we need some guidance. We all have something to learn from others, and this can open up the most wonderful opportunities.
In Lebanon, our local partner is helping to run book clubs for Syrian refugees, so that they can gain literacy skills and provide for their families – and enjoy some respite from life’s daily challenges.
These special programmes provide a wonderful support service, fostering hope, confidence and a sense of solidarity for women and children in difficult circumstances, who learn skills to handle stress, solve problems and express their emotions.
As we spend time reflecting this Advent, we too can learn from others. We can seek to gain a better insight into the challenges faced by our brothers and sisters around the world as we encounter their stories.
And we can echo the psalmist’s words, asking the Lord to guide us in his ways, teach us his paths and lead us to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to him.
Advent prayer
Lord,
teach us your paths
and guide us to do what is right,
to care for our world and
support our sisters and brothers
as they create a better future for themselves
and for their families.
