They proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least

Jonah 3:5

What is fasting and why is it important during Lent? In today’s Old Testament reading we hear the story of the people of Nineveh and how they listen to Jonah’s warning. They choose to fast to show they are listening to God. This means they gave up eating for a short period of time to focus on what God was saying to them.

Lent is a time when we too try to give things up and spend time listening to God. We can use some of the money we might usually spend on treats for ourselves to reach out to help people in need.
