Jenny Garzón Saavedra is a youth worker in the Colombian Amazon

…the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.

Matthew 1:20

What are you dreaming of this Advent? A more peaceful world? A deeper connection with God?

Like his Old Testament namesake, St Joseph is a dreamer. In today’s gospel he receives a dream telling him not to be afraid to take Mary for his wife and he responds with faith and love.

As we dwell on Joseph’s dream, we can reflect on Pope Francis’ challenge in Fratelli Tutti for all people to unite and dream together of a better world: “Let us dream, then, as a single human family…as children of the same earth which is our common home.” (FT#8)

Jenny Garzón Saavedra is a youth worker in the Colombian Amazon. After more than 50 years of conflict, Colombia is not an easy place for young people. Jenny’s faith inspires her to dream and work for a peaceful future, where children’s rights are respected and where people come together to care for our common home:

“I dream of people living in the Amazon, looking after the natural resources, protecting and defending them so that they last forever.”

Let’s pray for the courage to listen deeply to God and dream of a better world. Then, like St Joseph and Jenny, let’s respond with courage and hope, as we work to make those dreams a reality.

Advent prayer

Lord, Father of our human family,
may our hearts be open
to all the peoples and nations of the earth.
May we recognise the goodness and beauty
that you have sown in each of us,
and thus forge bonds of unity, common projects,
and shared dreams.
Amen.
