When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

Matthew 1:24

Joseph can be in danger of being an overlooked character at the back of the nativity scene, but today’s gospel reminds us of his pivotal role. He has a dream telling him not to be afraid to take Mary for his wife, and he responds with faith and love.

Pope Francis’ devotion to St. Joseph is well known. In the letter Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), he names St. Joseph as “the special patron of all those forced to leave their native lands because of war, hatred, persecution and poverty.”

Today is International Migrants Day. It is a day to celebrate the contribution migrants make across the world. It also highlights the challenges faced by those on the move, especially those forced to leave their homelands in search of safety. According to the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR), over 6 million people have fled Ukraine into neighbouring countries and beyond. Most of those who have fled are women and children, who have had to leave behind their loved ones. In addition, over 4 million people have been displaced within Ukraine, while many others – in particular elderly people – are stranded in areas affected by active fighting.

As we celebrate the courage and love of St Joseph today, we also honour the resilience shown by refugees today. Just as St Joseph protected and cared for the child Jesus, may we open our hearts to reach out in love to all those seeking welcome and safety. In the face of negativity and hatred towards migrants, may we have the courage to draw attention to their contribution to society.

Advent prayer

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage
and defend us from every evil.
Amen.
