A parishioner from Reading prays as he takes part in a Jubilee pilgrimage
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.
At this time of year, which can feel overwhelmingly commercialised, today’s readings remind us of what is really important. For us as Catholics, this season is not about what possessions we have or desire. It is not about gathering more stuff, having the latest things or eating the fanciest food.
What is truly important is the baby that will be born to Mary: the child who is the Son of God; Emmanuel – God-with-us – who will accompany us in all that we face.
In the psalm today, we are told that it is those with a pure heart, who are not distracted by earthly possessions, who will climb the mountain of the Lord. We are called to seek God, for this is where our true fulfilment lies. It is with God that we will find joy.
God is with us. So, let’s take a moment to stop, to breathe. To be grateful for what we have and pause in our search for the next new thing, which will bring us only fleeting happiness.
As Christmas draws closer, let us spend time reflecting on what is really meaningful, and supporting one another to make the world a better place.
Loving God,
wash away our desires
for worthless things.
Help us to see what is truly important
and to know that you are always with us.
Amen.
