Nader shows the pots that he makes at his business in Syria

So they picked up stones to throw at him...

John 8:59

The men who picked up stones to throw at Jesus were angry, and so they turned to violence to attack the problem as they saw it.

Nader, 61, is a potter from Syria. He lives in an area still deeply affected by the conflict; his home is surrounded by damaged buildings.

“We were doing well,” he says, “producing and prospering. Then the crisis happened, and our workshop was destroyed...I wanted to work. I started working in different fields, any job I could find. Then we regained our craft. If it does not enrich, at least it preserves our dignity.”

With the help of your donations, Nader was supported by local experts to start over with a small business. “God bless them,” he says, “they were the reason for my re-start.” Now he has returned to making and selling pottery locally.

He used to sell to France and the Netherlands, he explains, but he is happy that he is able to return to work at last and to help others. “I hired three workers, and they provide for three households at least,” he says.

Faced with so much violence in our world today, may we seek peace and play our part to help others rebuild their lives. A better world needs all of us. May we be pilgrims of hope.

Prayer

God of hope, help us to counter violence, conflict and aggression by seeking peace. May we become pilgrims of hope in our troubled world. Amen.
