Nader works on his pottery at his workshop in Syria

If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me.

John 10:37

Pope Francis reminds us, “Christ showed the depth of his love for us not by lengthy explanations but by concrete actions.” (Dilexit Nos, #33)

How do we know whether or not someone loves us, if not by their actions? These are what tell us the truth of their words, and our actions in turn show others where our own hearts are rooted.

Jesus tells the crowd that they can judge whether or not he is speaking the truth, by simply looking at what he does.

Even after the long years of war in Syria, Nader is nonetheless touched by love. Someone has reached out to him, and given him practical assistance, so that he can start his pottery workshop again. “I love pottery,” he says, “and I love to teach it.”

So, those who gave to him also gave him the chance to share with others and to live with dignity. Through his work he provides for his family, and by employing others, he gives them the chance to care for their own families in turn.

It is like the ripple of water when we skim a pebble – it moves outward from the centre and we cannot see where it ends. Working together, as one global family, our actions can gradually change the world for the better.

Prayer

God of love, may we be inspired to show our love for others. May we be truthful, authentic and compassionate. May we seek peace, where there is conflict, and love where there is hatred and division. Amen.
