Call for debt justice
Add your name to Pope Francis' call for world leaders to take action on the global debt crisis.
A woman stands outside her home in Bangladesh that collapsed in Cyclone Amphan.
Intention
Today we pray for a more just world, where those who are poor are not further disadvantaged by the burden of debt.
Canticle of the Sun
“We praise you, Lord, for Brothers Wind and Air,
fair and stormy, all weather’s moods,
by which you cherish all that you have made.”
Reflection
Like St Francis, we praise God for the gifts of air and wind, for the breath of life which sustains all of creation.
Yet, we also know too well the impacts of the climate crisis on our world. Increasing numbers of natural disasters such as hurricanes, droughts and floods leave devastation in their wake, particularly in low-income countries, who have contributed the least to the climate crisis.
These countries are often forced to borrow money to rebuild, which increases their debt. Today 1 in 4 countries globally are in debt crisis, spending more on paying back their debt than on health, education or measures to mitigate the climate impacts.
Prayer
Creator God,
the gentle breeze and falling rain,
refresh us and give us life.
But we have upset the earth’s natural balance,
forgive us for our lack of care.
Breathe your Spirit upon us, O Lord,
and lead us to follow the example of St Francis,
as we seek to build a better world
and sing a song of praise for all creation
St Francis, pray for us.
