Launch of the Cancel Debt Choose Hope campaign in the Jubilee Year

Come to me all you who labour, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.

Matthew 11:28-30

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you,
because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Under the weight of the cross, Jesus is once again brought to his knees. After this second fall, Jesus’ struggle to rise up again is much harder.

Many people are falling under the weight of the cost of living and of increasing inequality in our world. The number of low and middle-income countries in debt crisis has more than doubled since 2015. In many countries debts are being repaid at the expense of hiring doctors and teachers, building schools, hospitals and sewage systems, preparing for floods or coping with drought.

We think of all among us who are trying to hold onto hope despite the challenges that they face, those who are striving to make ends meet in a system that is broken and which keeps people poor.

How can we live in solidarity with those who feel despondent or invisible?

Prayer

Jesus, you stumbled and fell.
You lost strength and became tired.
And yet you carried on.
Walk with us.
When we find it hard to keep going,
give us the strength we need
to finish our work as well as we can
and show love to others.

Amen.
