Floating gardens in South Sudan help people grow food in areas where flooding has made farming nearly impossible.
I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.
On the brink of entering the Promised Land, Moses presents the people of Israel with a stark choice: life and prosperity, or death and disaster.
We, too, face a moment of choice in our reaction to the climate emergency. As Pope Francis warned in his final apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum: “Our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point.” (#2)
Across the world, climate change is making it hard for many of our neighbours to grow enough to eat. In parts of Zimbabwe there is too little rain. In parts of Bangladesh and South Sudan, there is too much. The result is the same – seeds fail to grow, plants die, and families go hungry.
To choose life for ourselves and for future generations means not only changing our own practices, but coming together to advocate urgently for renewed national and international action in tackling the climate crisis.
Prayer
God of grace,
may we be grateful for your gifts,
courageous in making changes,
and committed to action,
so that we may choose life for ourselves
and for all people.
Amen
