Campaigners stand outside Downing Street ready to hand in the debt justice petition.
Seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.
Restoring justice is an undeniable theme of the Scriptures; God’s concern for those experiencing poverty, for people marginalised and oppressed runs throughout the Bible.
Currently, the world population is around 8.2 billion people. The UN reports that some 808 million people – one in ten worldwide – live in extreme poverty, which is defined as surviving on less than US$3 per person per day.
Recognising injustice is perhaps easiest for those directly affected. Those who benefit, or simply stand by, have a harder time acknowledging the wrong.
Today’s reading from the prophet Isaiah challenges us to confront our role within the system of oppression. Do we put pressure on our leaders to make global poverty a national concern? When our funds are limited, do we still prioritise charitable giving? What actions are we taking to address the climate emergency?
Considering our own complicity in structural injustice can be uncomfortable. This Lent, let’s have the courage to lean into that discomfort and make changes so that we can work together for a better world.
Prayer
God of all,
help us recognise injustice
where we fail to see it,
so we can witness to the
justice and generosity
of your kingdom.
Amen.
Act
