Tayla is 12 years old and loves studying maths but when she first started going to school, she couldn't focus. After walking to collect water and with little food to eat, she would often arrive at school exhausted. Sometimes she didn’t make it to school at all.
When children don’t have enough to eat or drink, they don’t just feel hungry and thirsty – they stop learning and the dreams they once had slip away, but thanks to your donations, Tayla is now being given the chance to learn and pursue her dream of being a doctor.
It started with something simple: helping one child have enough to eat and safe water to drink at school.
Because of your generous donations at Fast Day, our local partners were able to work with Tayla’s community to build a solar-powered water system, pumping water from the ground to Tayla’s village and school. As well as reliable, safe water source, the school can now grow their own vegetables, providing the children with nutritious meals too.
Now, Tayla and her classmates have access to safe water and nourishing food at school, helping them to stay in school and grow their God-given talents.

At Lent 2026, we heard the story of Shorai and his wife Hamunyare, farmers who were struggling to grow enough food to feed their family because of successive droughts in Zimbabwe where they live.
Shorai and his community had an idea for a garden where the whole community could grow crops to feed their families so they reached out to CAFOD's local partners.
Now, thanks to your generous donations at Family Fast Day - our local partner was able to help them build an eco-garden and a solar-powered water pump, turning dry ground into fertile land.
“Since the last visit from the CAFOD team, we have been doing well,” says Hamunyari. “We recently harvested maize from our garden, and we are confident that we will be able to sustain and feed our grandchildren for the next four months.”
Their garden is now a reliable source of food, and the couple proudly explains that they planned and planted their vegetables together, ensuring regular, nutritious meals for the family.
