How Rachel went from parish volunteer to marathon runner

8 September 2025
Rachel - Abingdon Marathon

Rachel Breward, a long-time supporter of CAFOD, is taking on an incredible challenge this autumn: running her first full marathon at the Abingdon Marathon.

Rachel has been part of the CAFOD community for many years, supporting both through fundraising and as a parish volunteer. For her, running for CAFOD is about turning a personal passion into a powerful way of making a difference.

Why Rachel runs for CAFOD

Rachel shares:

“I've been supporting CAFOD for many years now, both through fundraising and as a local parish volunteer. I find that fundraising for an event gives me a concrete way to help the work of CAFOD and raise awareness to others about CAFOD's work – especially those who have never heard of CAFOD. CAFOD's work is important to me as it helps me feel like I can make a difference: combining my support with that of others to make a bigger impact to help support our brothers and sisters around the world.”

Building on past challenges

This isn’t Rachel’s first time lacing up her running shoes for CAFOD.

“I've done a couple of fundraising events for CAFOD over the last few years, namely the Big Lent Walk and my first half marathon. And I'm delighted to be able to use my running training to support CAFOD again for my first full marathon!”

She sees her efforts as a way of combining talent and passion with service:

Each of us has our talents and passions, and I like that I have found a way to use something that I enjoy working hard for to raise money for CAFOD. I've been training extremely hard for the event, and having a fundraising drive helps to keep the focus.

Training hard, fundraising strong

Rachel has been preparing since October, putting in hours of running and gym training. Now, as race day approaches, she has launched her fundraising efforts:

“So far, I've been doing a lot of training (since last October), both out running and, in the gym, but I've only just started fundraising! I've created my JustGiving page (very easily!) and I'm now circulating this round my family, friends, social media, workplace, and of course my Parish newsletter! I aim to raise £500, but hopefully I'll get a bit more than this!”
