Campaigners at Flame 2025
It’s July, and the Jubilee Year of 2025 is halfway through. This holy year of reconciliation and restoration is a natural time to draw attention to the global debt crisis, and CAFOD has been working closely with our sister Caritas agencies around the world, as well as organisations like Christian Aid and Debt Justice in the UK.
In April, the global campaign secured one of few official side events at the spring meetings of World Bank and IMF, with speakers from the Vatican Commission, the World Bank and IMF themselves and CAFOD partners. Such high profile opportunities are vital for pressing this issue to those who can truly bring change.
In May, groups in 40 countries took part in a global Relay of Hope. Many met outside key financial institutions, such as the CAFOD-coordinated interfaith group outside the UK Treasury. This kind of coordinated action is designed to catch the eye of policymakers and give them a mandate to work for the change that’s needed.
On 20 June, a leading group of economists commissioned by Pope Francis published a Vatican report on the debt crisis, making key recommendations. At the critical Financing for Development Conference in Seville at the end of June, CAFOD supported two official side events at FFD, one with the Vatican Secretary of State’s office and other with the Vatican Commission.
On Wednesday, 9 July, in the UK we have a great opportunity to present the debt crisis to our elected representatives. Thousands of people will meet their MPs at the ‘Act Now, Change Forever’ lobby of Parliament.
There is much to do. Key occasions like the G20 meeting in South Africa and the vital COP30 conference in Brazil in November provide more opportunities to press for change in Jubilee 2025, and along with our partners, we are not giving up.
