The speakers' conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A to build an inter-faith plan on ambitious climate action, together.
The plan will demonstrate a commitment from major faith groups for urgent action on climate and energy transition. and build ambition as part of the Global Stocktake - a worldwide ‘audit’ on climate progress every five years.
Catholic aid agency CAFOD is organising Thursday’s event, alongside Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and EcoJudaism.
The aim is to strengthen the relationship between DESNZ and faith communities, and highlight the positive role faith groups can play - in mobilising society, supporting climate-vulnerable communities and encouraging governments to respond. It’s an opportunity for faith communities to be represented together and raise their shared concerns and observations directly with a government minister, to encourage and support ambitious and urgent action.
Faith has the power to bring people together. At a time of growing division and uncertainty, faith communities can build bridges, nurture hope and inspire collective action in response to the climate crisis.
Faith communities everywhere are helping people connect climate action with shared values of justice, compassion and responsibility for future generations. In doing so they can strengthen support for the ambitious action needed to protect people and the planet.
Interventions from religious groups including the Lambeth Declaration, Laudato Sí and Al-Mizan have had a significant impact on policy and practice, but, while faith communities can and must help mobilise society, governments must still lead.
Delivering a safer and more just future requires policies and commitments that match the scale and urgency of the challenge.
