Daniel, Goma (DRC)
Daniel the carpenter
In October last year, you responded generously to our Family Fast Day Appeal, inspired by the story of our neighbour Daniel, a young carpenter in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Daniel learned his craft at a training centre your donations support, and with the guidance of skilled local experts like Simon, Daniel learned to craft different kinds of furniture. Simon recognised Daniel’s potential early on, saying, “I saw that Daniel is one who understands things quickly. I am proud when I see the young people that I trained who are now independent.”
Daniel’s determination, combined with the skills he learned at the centre, enabled him to open his own workshop where he made and sold furniture and provided for his family.
Outbreak of violence
Since then, life in Goma has become even more difficult. An ongoing conflict between DRC government forces and rebel groups got much more serious in January, when rebels attacked and gained control of Goma, causing a major humanitarian crisis.
Thousands of families had to flee their homes in search of safety. Our partners already in Goma worked quickly in these dangerous conditions to provide emergency food, clean water and shelter to families who needed it.
The training centre had to close for the safety of its students and teachers – and Daniel also had to close his workshop and leave Goma temporarily for his own security.
The training centre reopens
But thanks to the courage and resilience of local people – and your donations – the vocational training centre has now reopened. Our young neighbours in Goma are once again learning carpentry, tailoring, and other skills that will help them earn a living.
Simon’s hope is that the training centre can continue to offer hope and practical help in Goma: “I would love for people in the UK to keep helping these young people so that those on the streets can get occupations in order to have a better life.”
Thank you for continuing to stand alongside our neighbours affected by conflict, and helping young people to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
Family Fast Day is Friday 3 October
This Harvest, we invite you to find out how you can help your neighbour Waré, who walks hours each day to collect water for her family.
