Advent calendar 2023 - 25 December

The Light of the World has come among us.

A light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not overpower.

John 1:5

As we look around us today, the darkness can sometimes seem to be closing in on us. We see the hardship of the people of Afghanistan, whose rights have been eroded by the Taliban even as they struggle with drought, cold and hunger. We see the devastating impact of increasingly severe weather events such as the floods in Pakistan and Libya this year. We see the suffering caused by conflict in Ukraine, Syria, Sudan, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories and other war zones.

But today we also see the light. The newborn baby with a soft spot on his head and Mary’s milk on his breath is God himself, choosing to be born among us in poverty, persecution and vulnerability. God is with us and hope reigns! The Light of the World has come among us to reveal to us the fullness of God’s love.

May the light of Christ burn in each of us today, so that we can bring light and peace to others: in our families, in our communities and in our world.
