Prayers for Christmas

“This is no time for a child to be born,” writes the poet Madeleine L’Engle, on the birth of Jesus, “with the earth betrayed by war & hate.” And perhaps as we look at the darkness in our world – the violence, division and inequality – we may feel the same. And yet, the poem ends: “Love still takes the risk of birth.”
Today we celebrate that love and the light it brings to our world. Love entered the world as a helpless baby, born among us in poverty, persecution and vulnerability, dispelling the darkness and revealing to us the fullness of God’s love.
“It’s the light in the stove and the light inside us all.” says Maria, as she stands beside the little stove in the kitchen burning bright and warming their home. The essential firewood was provided by the local Church organisation CAFOD supports with your donations. We are grateful for everything you do for your brothers and sisters around the world.
May the light of Christ burn in each of us today, so that we can bring light and warmth to others: in our families, in our communities and in our world.
Tender God,
as we celebrate Christmas,
fill us with the light and compassion of Christ,
so that we may bless all the human family
with his love and his peace.
Amen.
