When Austin's wife, Sharon, died in 2022 she had been part of his life for fifty-five years. As her health deteriorated she told a good friend of theirs that she was worried how Austin would react when her life came to an end, that he would contain his emotions and feelings, and withdraw from life. The friend passed on this concern to him. Austin decided he had to do something that he might find therapeutic and began writing verse, which developed into a book. In this moving piece, Austin shares one of his poems, written in her honour, that reflects on love, loss, and hope.

Time for birds to fly.
My Love has heard the call
From the Lord of sea and sky.
Her spirit lives on
Through time and space.
Though her time here is done,
She showers us with grace.
