On 22 July, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, offered a powerful reflection on the suffering in Gaza:
“Christ is not absent from Gaza. He is there — crucified in the wounded, buried beneath the rubble, and yet present in every act of mercy, every candle in the darkness, every hand extended to the suffering.”
This sacred presence, he emphasised, demands action:
“Humanitarian aid is not only necessary — it is a matter of life and death,” he continued. “To refuse it is not merely a delay, but a sentence. Every hour without food, water, medicine or shelter inflicts profound harm.”
Our partners are continuing to respond urgently and they have been clear that, with more funds, they can do more to meet the desperate needs and provide essential items to their communities

What Pope Leo has said about the Gaza crisis
Following the recent attack on the Holy Family Church in Gaza on 17 July, Pope Leo reiterated the call for peace and that international law must be respected:
“I once again call for an immediate end to the barbarity of this war … I renew my appeal to the international community to observe humanitarian law.”
