Church leaders urge donations to Myanmar earthquake appeal

7 April 2025

Catholic Church leaders have asked for prayers and donations to support the people of Myanmar, whose lives have been devastated by the recent earthquake.

Even before the earthquake, long-running conflict meant that many families in Myanmar were already struggling to put food on the table.

Now many thousands are in need of food, water and shelter. Your donations to the DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal mean that the Catholic Church can provide this emergency help to families who need it.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols

Cardinal Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, has called the scale of the suffering in Myanmar deeply distressing:

“I commend the swift response of CAFOD, the Church in Myanmar and the DEC in providing essential aid.

"We will continue to pray for all those affected—those who have lost loved ones, those in need of healing, and those working tirelessly to bring aid and hope in these challenging times.”

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo

Cardinal Bo, Archbishop of Yangon and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar, said:

"We are deeply touched by the promise of support by the Catholic Church everywhere. The people need food, shelter, medicine and all life-saving materials."

The Cardinal also confirmed that the "Church’s personnel and religious groups would be the best channel to bring assistance" to those in need.

Bishop John Arnold

Bishop John, Bishop of Salford, reminds us that, in giving, we are actively participating in the Body of Christ and responding to God's call to love and care for others.

He remembered the welcome he received from the people of Myanmar he met when he visited the country and the urgent need for relief work.

How your donations can help

Your donation today will help more people with the urgent assistance they need.

Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our sisters and brothers in Myanmar.

Prayer for all affected by the Myanmar earthquake

God of mercy,
we pray for all people
affected by the earthquake in Myanmar.

Enfold them in your love
and console them in their grief
as they mourn the death of loved ones
and the destruction of their homes.

Strengthen and guide all those
responding to this disaster
as they seek to bring comfort and relief
in this time of sorrow and pain.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,
whose love endures forever,
Amen.
