The crisis in Sudan has plunged the country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Wednesday 15 April marks three years since conflict broke out in Sudan. Today, our sisters and brothers are living through the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Millions have been forced to flee their homes and thousands have lost loved ones.
“Families are not only escaping violence, but they are desperately searching for safety, food and medical care,” reports Sara Abdallah, programme officer in Sudan.
Your donations are helping families survive. You stand with experts like Sara in Sudan who are working tirelessly to deliver shelter, life-saving food and safe water.
“In this moment of deep suffering, CAFOD is standing alongside the people of Sudan, working through trusted local partners.”
Answer Christ’s call to love one another and donate to help our neighbours in Sudan.
Why is there a crisis in Sudan?
Sudan has been affected by conflict since April 2023. The fighting is mainly between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
But the war is not an isolated crisis. The violence is being actively fuelled by a steady influx of foreign weapons and funding, turning what began as a domestic power struggle into a high-stakes proxy war.
Sadly, it is our sisters and brothers suffering from the horrors of conflict. Over 150,000 people have already lost their lives. 9 to 9.3 million people – over the population of London – have fled their homes inside Sudan. Whilst neighbouring countries like Egypt and South Sudan now host an estimated 4.3 million refugees.
The hunger and the influx of people fleeing has severely impacted women, who now face crisis-levels of violence.
Yet, despite the extreme challenges, our local teams continue to deliver life-saving work. You are with them, helping families face the unimaginable.
How are you helping?
In Sudan, it is often local organisations who are the first, and sometimes only, responders to a crisis. With your help, we work closely with Church partners, religious leaders and other local experts to deliver life-saving help like emergency food, safe water and shelter.
Families in Sudan need our support more than ever. Hospitals have collapsed, food supplies have been disrupted, and access to humanitarian aid has been severely restricted. As a result, families are facing extreme hunger, and rates of acute malnutrition are rising rapidly.
But what is acute malnutrition?
“In the context of Sudan, malnutrition usually refers to the acute malnutrition, a condition resulting from a relatively short period where children and adults do not have enough food or nutrients, leading to wasting and high risk of disease and dying.” Sara, programme officer in Sudan.
In response, our teams have established a 24-hour malnutrition treatment centre. Here, children receive urgent, life-saving care.
As Sara explains, “We provide life-saving food through outpatient programs that treat children suffering from acute malnutrition.”
This centre is a vital lifeline. In the face of extreme hardship, it is helping to treat children as well as providing essential support to families in crisis.
How are you sharing hope?
Your donations continue to help our sisters and brothers sharing hope and life-saving support.
Even in the midst of these challenges, there are things that give people hope. For many families, local humanitarian workers and organisations like CAFOD provide life-saving support, food, safe water, and healthcare which shows them that they are not forgotten.
